The Nemo Pentalite was named as Backpacker magazines most versatile tent. This is a lightweight large sized tent with a spin on the classic pyramid shape. Instead of having four sides like a typical pyramid, the Nemo Pentalite uses five walls to create more interior space and also has a vestibule option which will give you an additional eight square feet of useable storage space.
The designers of the Nemo Pentalite patterned a tent that can be set up as a traditional pyramid or guyed out to create nearly vertical walls. The idea behind the shape was that everyone could sit up in their own sleeping space without feeling crunched by the pole or tent wall.
Each wall of the tent has a vent that can be guyed out. By doing this, you fully expose the mesh vent, and pull the tent wall away from the inside of the tent. This makes a big difference in creating the largest possible usable space inside the tent.
This all goes to show that five sides are better than four. Compared to conventional square pyramid designs, the Nemo Pentalite 4-Person 3-Season Tent offers a near rectangular sleeping area and a roomy additional triangular vestibule area.
There is an optional “wedge” which is a mesh wall that zips into the Nemo Pentalite giving you the ultimate protection from bugs and the elements. One cool feature about the wedge is that it let’s the pole pass through the floor so that it doesn’t rub or abrade the floor fabric. Nemo calls it the Pole Port.

Nemo Pentalite – Pros and Cons
What’s Good
- The through-the-floor pole design of the wedge is well thought out and protects the floor from excessive abrasion.
- The use of Velcro and zippers for attaching the Wedge eliminates the need for excessive material while still providing complete bug protection. This design saves weight over more traditional inserts.
What’s Not So Good
- Use of the Wedge means no perimeter ventilation along three sides.
- Condensation on the inside of the tent runs down the walls and collects on the floor of the Wedge.
- No tie-out on the front of the Wedge means that it can shift around, stressing the floor fabric around the pole.
- Triangular shape of the vestibule hinders use of all the floorspace.
