How to choose best tents with AC Opening/port?

Now that you are looking to buy a tent which can get your AC fitted in, there are a number of things you must consider before you buy it. Frankly, most people do not use the ACs with the tents, and if you are going to do so, be ready for some hiccups. So, we try to list the main issues that arise when attaching ACs to tents so that you can purchase the best tent for your needs.

  1. Tent Insulation
    • If you are going to cool down your tent with AC, make sure the tent you buy is well insulated 3-season or 4-season tent. Large mesh ceilings are a big no. Tents with dark rest technology are preferred that keep the tent cool for longer duration.
  2. AC Flap Dimensions
    • A number of people go for the DIY approach and cut the holes in camp for the AC. For the long run, it is never recommended unless you sew the edges with quality threads and keep it waterproof at the same time. You must buy the AC that matches with your tent flap. It may not exactly match it, but we recommend to get the AC which is slightly smaller than your flap so you can insulate with polyester fabric. Don’t cut your flap to make it wider, unless you want to throw your tent away after one use.
  3. AC Flap Location
    • In most of the cases it does not matter but if you have limited space to put your tent, or the AC duct or electric cables need to come from a certain location, make sure the tent duct is located at the required side so its not a hassle after setting up the tent.
  4. Fabric Material
    • You need the tent to be insulated so the fabric must be thicker. Nylon fabrics are lightweight, preferred by backpackers but not as UV resistant as polyester so we recommend polyester fabric with good thickness and blocking. The Denier (unit for fabric thickness/threads) should be 75 or higher at least. The higher the D the thicker the fabric is. 75D to 150D fabrics provide a good protection whereas thinner ones are not recommended if you want to use AC in the tent.
  5. Keep the condenser away from tent fabric
    • Condensers usually get warm after sometime and may melt / damage your tent fabric no matter how strong it is. It is recommended to keep the duct on the AC flap and keep condenser farther away from the tent to avoid damage. It is always good to keep on monitoring the tent fabric near the AC for safety. If you fancy DIY stuff, you may use insulated pipes or insulated fabric around the flap to be safe.
  6. Have you already bought a tent without AC flap?
    • If you have already bought a tent without an AC opening or flap, it requires a little bit of skill to make the AC opening yourself. You may want to choose where and how large the flap you need, cut it, glue it and then sew it. Always use the heavy-duty fabric glue and sealant, and good quality zipper/Velcro while sewing it. So, You may need to sew an extra cover over the zippers just to ensure it is waterproof.
  7. Other stuff you need!
    • You need to make sure you don’t miss out on anything on the holiday trip. Below is some of the list that we have come up with, however you may go through your AC type and tent to ensure if you might be missing on sometime.
    • AC
      • If you have not bought an AC already, we recommend to buy a portable AC for your tent. Firstly, its easy to carry along, and secondly, it’s a lot easier to fit in the duct of the AC to your tent flap. If you have a window AC, you must be careful in installing the AC in the flap by making sure the condenser is not close to fabric, neither it is totally sealed by fabric as it needs circulating air.
Warning: If the condenser of window AC is blocked by fabric, it may lead to heat and fire.
    • AC Stand
      • You need AC stand to put your AC on, in a stable position. Usually the tent flaps are 10-12” high from the ground, so depending on your AC design, you need a stand for your AC that can keep the AC on the required height.
    • Power cord
      • This is pretty basic, but you need a high-power AC source at your camping site. Make sure you have the length of the cable you need to go through to the power source.
    • Portable Generator
      • If you are looking to camp far from formal camping sites where you don’t have any AC power source, we suggest you buy a small portable generator that can keep you cool and run the AC. Any portable generator from 3000-5000watts will be enough.

How to maintain tent air conditioner?

Once you have decided on what tent air conditioner you should purchase and have made the purchase, you need to make sure that you know how to properly maintain it.  Properly maintaining your unit can add several years to the life of it and will keep it running as good as new.  So, follow the tips below for keeping your tent air conditioner maintained and you will be sure to enjoy it for years and years to come.

Tent Air Conditioner Cleaning

For the housing of the unit, the main thing is to just try to keep it clean from dust, dirt, mud, etc… to do this, just use a damp rag or cloth to wipe it off when needed, especially before storing.  Do not use any strong chemicals to wipe down the housing, detergents or chemically treated cloths.  Also, before storing the unit for long periods of time, make sure to drain the water tank, clean the filter and intake vent and turn the tent air conditioner on fan mode to let it run for 2 or 3 hours in order to completely dry the interior.

Tent Air Conditioner Filter

One important maintenance procedure that should be routine is to clean the filter.  This should be done about once a week or so.  Usually this will involve removing the filter and lightly tapping it to get loose dirt and dust particles off of it, then lightly rinsing it with water if it is a type of filter that can handle it.  It is best however to look at the owner’s manual for your particular tent air conditioner to see what it says regarding the removal and cleaning of the air filter.

If you ever start to smell and odor or see mold growing on the unit, you will want to give it a thorough cleaning.  This involves removing the filter frame and cleaning it, then using some sort of acidic spray to clean the cooling coils really well. So, look for any other areas that may have mold growing and give it a good cleaning. Once you have given your tent air conditioner a thorough cleaning, run it for 6 or 8 hours on the air conditioner setting, then turn the unit off and drain the water.

By following this simple advice, you should be able to easily maintain your tent air conditioner so that it will run efficiently and cool to the best of its capacity for many years to come.  If you fail to perform the simple maintenance discussed above, it could easily take a year or two off of the life of your tent air conditioner.  The best thing you can do is to not get too lazy about your maintenance so that you do not end up having to get your portable air conditioner repaired or worse, replaced.

How to improve the efficiency of tent air conditioner?

Most people buy a tent air conditioner, give the manual a quick read and get it up and running as quickly and easily as possible. There is nothing wrong with this, but the fact is that there is a good chance that their unit is not running as efficiently as it could be. If your tent air conditioner is running as efficiently as possible, you will be able to cool down quicker and cool larger spaces with the same unit. So let’s look at some ways that you could increase the efficiency of your portable air conditioner.

Efficiency Tips

If you are planning on operating the unit throughout the entire day, make sure to start it up early before the afternoon heat really hits. It is easier to keep an area cool than it is to cool it down from 100 degree weather. If you are planning on operating the unit throughout the entire night and it is cooler outside than it is inside, open up a window or door for 15 or 20 minutes before turning the tent air conditioner on. This will allow an exchange of air allowing the cooler air from outside to come in. After this, close the windows and then start up your portable air conditioning unit.

For the exhaust hose part of your tent air conditioner, try to keep the hose as short and straight as possible. The hose still needs to be long enough to effectively vent out the warm air away from your area, so try to find a happy balance here. Even, The shorter and straighter the hose, the quicker and more effectively the exhaust will be vented out. Another trick with the hose is to insulate the hose. This is because as the warm air travels through the hose, the hose will emit heat back into your area. If you insulate the hose, it should keep this heat from being emitted until the warm air reaches the end of the hose.

Cooling correctly

When you first begin cooling your tent or other area, turn the tent air conditioner on high for the first 30 minutes to get the best air circulation. This will get the warm air out and replace it with cooler air quickly. Then turn your unit down to low the rest of the time. This allows air to circulate through the cooling coils more slowly, thus becoming cooler than it would be on high power.

For units that use self evaporating technology, don’t use the cooling mode of continuous drainage. Also, when you allow the water to be collected and recycled, it will cool down the coils much quicker and much more effectively. This will in turn provide much better cooling and cooler air.

Conclusion – Tent Air Conditioner Efficiency

These are some easy things to do that will increase your tent air conditioner’s effectiveness quite a bit. Even, there are additional things you can do such as making sure the tent or room you are in is air tight when cooling. With these tips, you will be enjoying the coolest air possible from your tent air conditioner in the shortest amount of time. Make sure to check out the top selling tent air conditioners listed below.

Portable Ac or Window Air conditioner

The air conditioner comes in standard sizes for the tents, as they will not take up much space, and for this, you have to make a perfect strategy to get the conditioner working. The first thing is that you need to have a power supply for your camp and 120-volt electricity for your campsite. Also, an extension cord is also required to provide a source of power to the AC unit.

The second thing is to sit back and decide what to use for camping – a portable AC or a window conditioner. Also, if you ask us, we will say that you should go for a window conditioner, as it is cost-effective. Indeed, one of the difficulties is that a window air conditioner requires a window ledge to sit on and open ventilation to expel heat. Nothing to worry, you can do modifications in your tent to solve the problem, and some of the tents come with features to set the window air conditioner.

  • Ventilation: While the ventilation system in these tents is designed to maximize airflow, it’s important to note that the effectiveness of the ventilation may vary depending on the size and placement of the vents. It is essential to position the tent and the AC unit properly to ensure optimal airflow throughout the tent.
  • Portability: Tents with AC openings may be heavier and bulkier compared to traditional tents due to the additional materials and features required to accommodate the AC unit. This may make them less suitable for backpacking or other activities that require lightweight and compact gear.
  • Weather Resistance: While these tents are designed to withstand various weather conditions, it’s important to note that they may not be as durable as specialized tents designed for extreme weather conditions. If you frequently camp in areas with harsh weather, you may prefer a tent specifically built for those conditions.

Tents with AC openings are a great investment for campers who want to enjoy a comfortable and cool camping experience in hot weather. These tents provide temperature control, enhanced comfort, better sleep, and an extended camping season. When choosing a tent with AC opening, consider factors such as size and space, ventilation, portability, and weather resistance to ensure that you find the perfect tent for your needs. With the right tent, you can enjoy the great outdoors while staying cool and comfortable throughout your camping adventure.

Most of the tents reviewed by us don’t require highly sophisticated tools and assemble pretty quickly. Be careful with the hammer since some of the stakes are made of fiber glass and may break if too much pressure is applied.

What is 3-season or 4-season tent? Which one should I buy?

Most of the camps are season rated. 4-season tents can be used in any weather condition. These are generally made of strong fabric which keeps you warm in colder weathers as well. 3-season tents can be used in all weathers except winters since they do not protect against cold weather and snow. If you don’t plan to camp in cold weathers, we recommend not to go for 4-season camp and get a well ventilated one 3-seaons tent.
